The city of architectural marvel and known as the ‘pink city of India’, Jaipur is the place of any tourist’s delight. Hawa Mahal:

It is also known as the ‘Palace of Winds’ or ‘Palace of the Breeze’ and is counted as one of the most magnificent and dazzling pieces of work by the Rajput rulers. This is the supreme example of architectural magnificence, which speaks volumes about the glory of royal Rajputanas. The palace is five storied building and is shaped like a pyramid. The entire structure is made up of 953 small casements, each decorated beautifully with lattice work. The structure also has small balconies and arched roofs with hanging cornices. Also known as ‘Jharokhas’, these casements were especially designed for women  of the royal families to observe  processions and various activities taking place on the streets without themselves being seen.

Amber Fort:

The captivating attraction of this fort lies in its white marble and red sandstone carving, intricate decorations on walls and ceiling,  exquisite paintings of hunting scenes on walls and amalgamated style of the Hindu and the Islamic architecture. The fort is divided into four parts and each one is different from the other in terms of construction and decoration. The best attraction of this fort is an elephant ride which takes you to the fort.

Central Museum:

It is one of the oldest and the most famous places of Jaipur. Also known as the Albert museum it is located in the Ramnivas Garden. This museum is designed in the  Indo-Sarcenic style of architecture and has many pillars, courtyards and arches. The museum has extensive collection of jewellery, metalworks, sculptures and miniature paintings from the Udaipur, Jaipur, Bundi, Kota and Kishangarh schools of painting. The vivid collection of this museum gives a good insight into the bygone era of mighty Rajasthan.

There are a number of other tourist attractions in Jaipur that include Jaigarh Fort, Nahargarh Fort, Govind Deoji Mandir, Rambagh Palace, Kanak Valley and Laxmi Naryan Temple. Jaipur with its beautiful monuments and colourful bazaars offer tourist a wholesome experience that remains intact in their memory forever.

Hikkaduwa – Sun, Beach, Waves; the perfect recipe for a wonderful holiday

Situated around 100 km away from the capital city of Colombo, lays Hikkaduwa enroute to Galle. This otherwise laid back village has perked up in recent times and plays host to tourists – both local and foreign.

The sun kissed clean broad beaches, clear emerald waters, marine diversity, shipwrecks, all provide scintillating attractions for both young and old.

A famous attraction is the Coral Sanctuary, an immense expanse of shallow water surrounded by a reef. Though some of the corals have long since died, the area thrives with beautiful coral fish and other sea creatures. Snorkelling is possible and is a much enjoyed activity.

Of the many attractions in Hikkaduwa, surfing is possibly one of the favourites. The peak season for this area is between October and April. This stretch of beach also offers excellent diving opportunities. There are many places from where the visitor can obtain all necessary equipment. However if one is not too keen on taking a blind plunge into the blue waters, an expedition in a glass bottomed boat is also available to explore the marine bio diversity in the deep seas.

On the beach side, the visitor can also indulge themselves in some good shopping, with the town offering very good local handicrafts, jewellery, clothes and much more. Some excellent cafes and restaurants too have sprung up to cater to the great influx of tourists during season. These little spots, offer some of the most mouth watering food to tickle your taste buds – be it of Western or Sri Lankan origin.
