When people travel, the often find their way to the local markets and flea markets to try and find good products for cheap. This kind of tourist bartering is what a lot of economies often depend on. And, there is something about the experience of traveling and finding a great deal on something that enriches the tourist’s experience. One example of this is that there are markets in Florence that sell real leather products. Leather is something that Florence is known for. While the leather found at these markets is real, it is not exactly the highest quality possible. It is expected that you are supposed to barter to find the best deal.

The interesting thing about places that expect the tourists to barter is that when someone asks how much something is they will likely quote a higher price than they know it is worth. So on the one hand, if someone does not barter and just buys it anyway, the vendor makes a lot more money than they would have. On the other, if the tourist does not barter, it is likely that they are paying a lot more money than they need to be. The problem is, how do you know the difference? It is often that the street vendors are selling the goods rather inexpensively to begin with so either way the tourist may feel as if they got a good deal despite all that.

So, how should you go about engaging in tourist bartering? Well, that is something that some people are just naturally good at. There are people who bargain and haggle all the time and it seems as if it is a part of their very nature. But, there are some people who need to learn or do not even feel comfortable doing it. These are the people who likely will not even bother and will just buy the stuff. But, unless you learn from someone who is a natural at it, there may never be a time when they will feel comfortable.

Part of the problem with tourist bartering is that sometimes the tourists do not understand the local culture and do not understand that bartering is something that is expected of them so they never do it.
